I hear these words all the time - sustainability and resiliency - but what do they actually mean???
Sustainability is a complex concept. The most often quoted definition comes from the UN World Commission on Environment and Development: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations. Sustainability is most commonly associated with the environment, but also encompasses social and economic needs.
Resilience is the ability to anticipate risk, limit impact, and bounce back rapidly through survival, adaptability, evolution, and growth in the face of turbulent change.
Resilient communities minimize any disaster’s disruption to everyday life and their local economies. Resilient communities are not only prepared to help prevent or minimize the loss or damage to life, property, and the environment, but they also have the ability to quickly return people to work, reopen businesses, and restore other essential services needed for a full and timely economic recovery.
We encourage you to stay engaged throughout the Sustainability & Resiliency outreach and provide your input in various ways, starting with the visual preference surveys located on this page, by telling your story about your neighborhood or housing experiences, or by completing the Sustainability & Resiliency survey.
